From automating repetitive tasks to analyzing data for informed decision making, from gaining relevant insights about target audience to strengthening customer relationships through digital platforms, technology is vital in today’s business.
And this fact is reflected by the numbers: according to a Eurostat report, in 2022, more than 9 million persons worked as information and communications technology (ICT) specialists across the European Union. The highest number (2.1 million) worked in Germany, which provided work to more than one-fifth (22.6%) of the EU’s tech labor workforce.
Judging by the size of the market, one would think that demand meets supply everywhere, right? The truth is that most of the time all that glitters is not gold. And when we say that, we mean that in Slovenia (78.0%), Czechia (77.0%) and Germany (76.6%) more than 3 out to 4 enterprises that recruited or tried to recruit tech specialists in 2021, reported difficulties in filling those vacancies (according to the same previously cited source). But how did it get here? VON Tech specialists, a company with more than 10 years experience in helping IT businesses grow, have analyzed the situation and come up with an answer in this article.
Hiring IT specialists, a more complicated process than it seems
The process of hiring tech specialists requires a lot of patience and attention. The criteria that candidates must respect are not few, but the same is true when it comes to the recruiter. In other words, the ideal candidate may be right in front of you, but if you don’t have the knowledge to properly assess their skills, the recruitment process has already been altered. And unfortunately, that’s a problem companies often face.
Added to all this is the IT skills gap. When proximity plays an important role in the hiring process, you come down to a certain number of candidates. What does this mean? There is a chance that their abilities are not that advanced, especially if we also take into account the speed with which the technology evolves and the requirements in this segment.
With these reasons in mind, it’s understandable why in 2021, according to Eurostat, in 72.5% of EU enterprises external suppliers performed the ICT functions. In all but one EU member state the majority of enterprises outsourced their tech functions, with the highest shares in Belgium (82.8%), Denmark (81.7%) and Malta (81.1%).
Outsourcing, an alternative to consider
Outsourcing is, without a doubt, one way you can reduce the risks when it comes to hiring IT staff. You have access to specialists located anywhere in the world, to a team that helps you correctly evaluate the employee’s performance and easily complete the bureaucratic aspects, and in addition, you also optimize the company’s costs.
Moreover, you also make better use of the time resources and significantly shorten the entire recruitment process, which means that you can focus on managerial duties and adapt your business strategy to the latest market trends, instead of supervising and coordinating these HR decisions.
Given the situation, it is not surprising that the share of enterprises outsourcing their ICT functions reached 83.1% among large enterprises, and 70.9% for small enterprises in 2021 (according to Eurostat).
